Shiregreen has been running a STOMP club for about 6 years now and Charlotte Westerman and her team found themselves with the opportunity to run a youth community for the young people that she knows in the area. 'Toast' named by the young people themselves runs on a Monday Evening. The team living out there are hardcore, creating space and time for the young people to be part of their everyday lives. This for some of the young people gives them a real safe place outside of their family and school situations. They are also seeking new ways of reaching out to the young people in the area including detached work on the streets, taking the young people on trips and invesgiating the possibility of schools work. We're believeing God has big plasns for the young people in Shiregreen and are praying for more and more young people to find their home in him.
Shiregreen is a mainly residential area to the north of the Northern General Hospital and north-west of Meadowhall.
Overall the area has higher proportions of 0 –17 year olds and fewer people over 60 than the city average. An estimated 5% of the total population are from ethnic minority backgrounds whose homes are concentrated towards the south of the area. This population is also younger than the city average. The biggest single ethnic grouping is of Yemeni origin and there are growing numbers of young people in the area of dual or multi-heritage. Others are of Pakistani, Somali and African-Caribbean origin. More recently, small but significant numbers of refugees and asylum seekers from a variety of countries have come to live in the area, particularly in older private rented accommodation.
